🔎 DAILY HEART EXAMINATION
Let the Word expose my reactions and train my response to reflect Christ.
- 1️⃣ When Jesus is worthy of total devotion, do I react with inner restraint and self-protection, or respond with wholehearted love like Mary?
- 2️⃣ When someone’s worship seems unusually bold, emotional, or costly, do I react with criticism, discomfort, or suspicion, or respond with humility and honor for what Christ may truly deserve?
- 3️⃣ In moments when Christ gives me opportunity to serve Him in a lowly or unnoticed way, do I react by protecting my image, or respond with the humility Mary displayed at His feet?
- 4️⃣ Today, what would extravagant devotion to Jesus actually look like in my choices, my generosity, my schedule, and my willingness to honor Him above myself?

💥 SINS / FAILURES
Where this passage exposes sinful attitudes, distorted values, or spiritual blind spots.
- 1️⃣ Human hearts can become so hardened against truth that even public miracles do not remove hostility toward Jesus or stop the desire to silence Him. (John 11:47-53, John 11:57, John 12:9-11)
- 2️⃣ Fear of man and self-protection can pressure people to cooperate with evil rather than openly identify with Christ when obedience becomes costly. (John 11:57, John 7:13, John 9:22-23)
- 3️⃣ We often underestimate Christ’s worth and hesitate to pour out costly love, praise, and devotion because our hearts still cling to measured, controlled worship. (John 12:3, Mark 14:3, Psalm 116:12-14)
- 4️⃣ Pride resists humble service, but Mary’s posture exposes how easily we avoid lowly acts of love that place Jesus above our dignity. (John 12:3, Luke 7:37-38, Philippians 2:3-5)
- 5️⃣ Crowds may gather around Jesus out of curiosity, fascination, or spectacle, yet still fall short of surrendered faith and wholehearted worship. (John 12:9, John 6:26-27, Matthew 15:8-9)
🏆 SUCCESSES / SPIRITUAL GROWTH
Where this passage models faith, maturity, worship, and godly response.
- 1️⃣ Jesus moved steadily toward Jerusalem because He would not be deterred from completing the Father’s mission, showing perfect obedience under full awareness of coming suffering. (Luke 18:31-33, John 12:1, Hebrews 12:2)
- 2️⃣ Bethany became a place of rest, friendship, and faithful hospitality, reminding us that homes can become holy settings where Christ is welcomed and honored. (John 12:1-2, Luke 10:38-42, Romans 12:13)
- 3️⃣ Mary’s anointing displayed extravagant love because she recognized Jesus’ unmatched worth and responded with generous worship rather than restrained calculation. (John 12:3, Mark 14:6-9, Psalm 63:3-5)
- 4️⃣ Mary’s wiping of Jesus’ feet with her hair showed deep humility, personal surrender, and a willingness to serve Christ in a way that cost her reputation and comfort. (John 12:3, James 4:6-10, 1 Peter 5:5-6)
- 5️⃣ Lazarus reclining at the table with Jesus stood as living testimony to Christ’s resurrection power, proving that transformed lives become public witnesses to the glory of God. (John 12:1-2, John 11:43-44, John 11:45)
🧭 LEADERSHIP DYNAMICS
How this passage shapes discernment, influence, courage, and spiritual leadership.
- 1️⃣ Strong leaders do not let threats, opposition, or hostile systems redirect them from God’s assignment when the mission has been clearly defined. (John 11:57, John 12:1, Luke 18:31-33)
- 2️⃣ Wise leadership understands that private homes and personal relationships often become strategic places of encouragement, restoration, and kingdom influence. (John 12:1-2, Acts 2:46, Philemon 1:1-2)
- 3️⃣ Mature leaders recognize and honor sincere acts of devotion, even when those acts seem excessive to practical or critical minds. (John 12:3, Mark 14:6-8, 2 Samuel 24:24)
- 4️⃣ Visible transformation in one person’s life can affect an entire community, so leaders should never underestimate the witness power of a changed life. (John 11:45, John 12:9-11, Matthew 5:16)
- 5️⃣ The atmosphere a leader cultivates matters: Bethany’s dinner reflected welcome, service, testimony, and worship all working together around Jesus. (John 12:2-3, Colossians 3:16-17, Hebrews 10:24-25)
