  1. Ignoring or resisting the prompting of the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:29; Ephesians 4:30)
  2. Reading God’s Word without seeking understanding or obedience (Matthew 13:13–15; James 1:22)
  3. Trusting religion, position, or morality instead of Jesus Christ for salvation (Philippians 3:4–9; Titus 3:5)
  4. Delaying public identification with Jesus through baptism (Matthew 10:32–33; Acts 2:38)
  5. Professing faith externally without true repentance and surrender to Christ (Matthew 7:21–23; 2 Corinthians 13:5)
