LESSONS LEARNED

Jesus gives His people real freedom, but Christian freedom is never meant to become selfish license. The Holy Spirit, God’s Word, and the family of God help believers discern what is truly beneficial so their choices honor Jesus and help the people around them.

SINS / FAILURES

  1. Demanding personal rights while ignoring whether those choices are wise, loving, or beneficial to others (1 Corinthians 6:12; Philippians 2:3-4).
  2. Using freedom in Christ as an excuse for unrestrained living that causes others to question the reality of our relationship with Jesus (Galatians 5:13; 1 Peter 2:16).
  3. Disregarding the Holy Spirit’s warnings and continuing into words or actions that wound people, shame ourselves, and harm the reputation of Jesus (Romans 8:12-14; Ephesians 4:30).

SUCCESSES / SPIRITUAL GROWTH

  1. Living in the freedom Jesus has earned while choosing wisdom, caution, and personal restraint for the good of others (1 Corinthians 6:12; 1 Corinthians 10:23-24).
  2. Listening to the Holy Spirit’s conviction before choices become harmful and responding quickly with repentance and obedience (Romans 8:5-14; Galatians 5:16-18).
  3. Developing a daily appetite for Scripture so God’s values shape decisions, relationships, and conduct (Psalm 119:105; Colossians 3:12-17).

LEADERSHIP DYNAMICS

  1. Christian leaders should teach that freedom in Christ must be measured not only by what is permitted but by what is beneficial and God-honoring (1 Corinthians 6:12; Titus 2:11-14).
  2. Leaders help believers test decisions through the Holy Spirit’s conviction, the wisdom of Scripture, and the effect choices have on other people (Romans 8:14; Hebrews 5:14).
  3. Spiritual leadership should cultivate a church family where believers encourage one another toward compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and love (Colossians 3:12-17; Hebrews 10:24-25).

EKKLESIA (THE CHURCH) PERSPECTIVE

  1. The church is a global family where believers learn from one another how to live in ways that bless families, neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, and cities (Galatians 6:2; Colossians 3:15-16).
  2. The gathered people of God should lovingly help one another restrain choices that may be lawful but are not beneficial (1 Corinthians 10:23-24; Romans 14:19-21).
  3. A church’s daily conduct gives the watching world a living picture of whether Christian freedom produces selfishness or Christlike love (John 13:34-35; Colossians 3:17).
